FYO provides free self-employment-oriented training skills in tailoring to orphans and vulnerable children out of school, child-mothers and women-headed households, as well as training in hand craft, digging, poultry keeping, music dance and drama, goat keeping, bee keeping, carpentry, brick laying and metal works.
FYO equips Orphans with the skills to enable them to be self-supporting in caring for themselves.
FYO teaches orphans tailoring skills and trains them to make African arts and crafts. Near completion of their training, the clothes and arts and crafts they created are sold.
African shirts, shorts and dresses are made. African arts and crafts include table mats from natural banana fiber, batiks (drawing on fabric with wax), hats and other items.
Groups of Orphans are provided with additional training for operating a small business. They are given one-time grants for initial expenses and are provided with sewing machines or crafts kits. These orphans start a small business as a team and also partner together for the care of their siblings. These are successful ventures and these orphans are excited that they can still make valuable contributions to their community.
FYO is training Orphans and Vulnerable children with survive skills to ensure that they are completely empowered. Currently, the following courses are offered: Tailoring and Designing 80% Practical and 20% Theory, Carpentry and Joinery 80% Practical and 20% Theory, Computer 80% Practical and 20% Theory.
Due to lack of tools, Welding, Mechanics and other courses are conducted on a small scale and currently the tools used in training are rented.
Orphans with more formal education have the opportunity to complete computer classes. The classes begin with typing skills. The basics of Windows are taught and followed by Microsoft Office applications. Individual advanced study in operating systems, Office applications and programming are available.
The training is purposeful, opening up opportunities for employment, as even fuel stations have computerized systems. The need for computer training is so recognized that FYO has at times been able to provide computer training for a fee to those able to pay.
