Education and Training for HIV/AIDS Orphans

Since numerous research shows that illiteracy limits the ability of adults in Uganda to become successful, formal education is one of FYO's focus areas. Currently the organization caters for the formal education (pays school fees) of 30 children and provides humanitarian assistance in terms of scholastic materials to orphans with the support from well wishers of the organization. We send these children to inexpensive day schools within their reach. FYO wishes to provide quality education to the most vulnerable children by sending them to the finest schools in Uganda in order to provide a brighter future for them. However, this call for support from the government, local and international organizations and individuals with the passion to help the needy orphans to provide for the education needs of these children.

Many areas in rural areas in Uganda need schools, qualified teachers, text books, supplies. FYO improves the quality and quantity of education in such areas by designing and implementing appropriate programs.

Example of problems we identify.

FYO reached out to the community in Kigugo village- Mukono District. The community lacked a school but it was determined to provide education to their children, so residents of that area organized themselves to construct temporary structures made of reeds and polythene sheets to serve as classrooms.

However these structures would accommodate a small number of children and it was not a fully fledged primary school. These structures were constantly worn out by unfavorable weather conditions and they had to be renovated every now and then. It was also disaster for the pupils whenever it rained. Presently, the structures are no more. The community is requesting for help because pupils are currently having their lessons from a small incomplete church building which accommodates a very small number of pupils and competent teachers and other scholastic materials are lacking.

Kigugo community lives in a rural setting where by families live in poverty and children walk long distances to find a school. Kigugo village being located near a lake (L.Victoria) has attracted young boys (as young as 9 years) to join fishing. Children are discouraged from continuing with school due to unfavorable conditions (unstable school environment).

FYO is continuously fundraising for such projects as construction of classrooms. In Kigugo village where the community urgently needs this kind of project, FYO has plans of building both a primary and a secondary school there with a stable school environment where the quality of learning can be high - pupils can obtain good scores on government exams. But this requires support from organizations, corporations and individuals.

You can choose a child to sponsor or contribute to construction of a school.

FYO also provides training in practical skills to orphans who have missed school for several years and find problems having to fit in the school curriculum.
